Fast Break at Inga’s on Chimes Street

Sandwich shops are more than plentiful in Baton Rouge—Quiznos, Subway, Jimmy John’s, Jason’s Deli … the list goes on. But sometimes, it’s nice to divert from a chain restaurant and grab a bite at a locally-owned spot.

While the food at Inga’s is tasty and the menu is expansive, the most impressive aspect of this small Chimes Street restaurant is its atmosphere.

Inga’s has a small-town vibe, something that’s not easy to get in Baton Rouge anymore. The interior is very homey, kind of dark-lit and boasts wrought-iron chairs and tables.

The menu is etched onto a chalkboard and, unlike many modern sub shops, the ingredients and toppings at Inga’s aren’t out on display. Rather than going down an assembly line, building your own sandwich, there is a less hurried vibe when ordering as you pick out toppings. For first-timers, there’s an “Inga’s Cheat Sheet” for easy ordering.

Inga’s offers seven-inch subs and 14-inch subs. I’d recommend the 14-inch, especially if you won’t be eating for a while. Though all sandwiches are specialty items, you can add and omit ingredients to customize them.

I had the steak sandwich, revered by LSU students as one of the best items on Inga’s menu. The steak is marinated in an Asian-style sauce, giving it a Teriyaki-esque flavor, which pairs well with ample amounts of pepper jack cheese on the toasted wheat bun.

Inga’s has two Baton Rouge locations—254 West Chimes St. and 1750 Brightside Lane. Both locations are open 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
