Baton Rouge restaurants join together to raise funds for fallen officers

Nearly three dozen restaurants across Baton Rouge and stretching all the way to Hammond will host fundraisers on Monday, July 25, for the families of the two Baton Rouge police officers and one sheriff’s deputy who died Sunday.

“To us, it’s not about getting business for us, it’s about getting people to go to restaurants that are going to donate,” says Javier Pallais, general manager and part owner of Tio Javi’s.

Many restaurant owners felt hurt and angry about the calculated attack on officers Sunday and wanted to do something to help the families.

On Monday, Metro Councilman and business owner John Delgado posted on his Facebook page that two of his establishments, Huey’s Bar and the Draft House, will donate 25% of their proceeds for all sales on Monday. He asked other bar and restaurant owners to join him. Word quickly spread and other restaurants jumped on, then began recruiting other businesses.

“We reached out to a lot of people, and we’re still reaching out to people, but a lot of people reached out to us,” Delgado says.

Jim Urdiales, owner of Mestizo on South Acadian Thruway, is one of the other big recruiters for the fundraiser. “This is what restaurateurs do: We rally. We don’t hide,” he says.

Urdiales has created a Facebook page to keep track of the growing list of participating restaurants donating percentages of their sales next Monday to benefit the officers’ families.
