Family picks: Baton Rouge Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ is back

A fairy tale from Russia gets a Louisiana update. Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre shows off its talent this weekend with a production of The Nutcracker: A Tale from the Bayou. The show puts the plot of the original play in a Louisiana setting, with sets modeled after Nottoway and Oak Alley plantations, telling the story of Clara’s Christmas dreams. This year’s performance includes professional guests artists Le’Brian Patrick, Meredith Broussard, Carlos Lopez and Alison Storming. Showtimes are Saturday, Dec. 20, and Sunday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the River Center Theater. Tickets start at $26.85. Get more information.

Ice skate at the River Center
Get your skates ready, Baton Rouge. The River Center is opening the rink for Ice Skating on the River, starting Friday, Dec. 19, with a free opening night. Following Friday, general admission tickets are $12. Group rates are available. Ice skating sessions run through Sunday, Jan. 4. There will be no sessions Christmas and New Year’s.
