Details on the Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival

The ninth annual Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival kicks off tonight at the Manship Theatre. This year’s slate of films includes documentaries, features and shorts that reflect the long history and culture of Jewish cinema. Check out a full schedule below. Tickets are $8.50 per screening.

Wednesday, Jan. 14 
The Sturgeon Queens, a G-rated documentary from director Julie Cohen about the century-old lox and herring emporium Russ and Daughters. The screening is followed by a discussion with Louisiana foodie Susan Rosenbaum. 7 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 15
The Lady in Number 6, a PG-rated short documentary from director Malcolm Clarke. This Oscar-winner tells the story of the world’s oldest pianist and Holocaust survivor, 109-year-old Alice Herz Sommer. 7 p.m.

Hitler’s Children, a PG-rated documentary that tells the story of the Holocaust from another point of view—from the family members of high-ranking Nazi officers who struggle with the burden of carrying a terror-inducing surname. (Screening follows The Lady in Number 6.)

Saturday, Jan. 17
The Wonders, an R-rated drama/comedy from director Avi Nesher that mixes the noir of Chinatown with the zaniness of Alice in Wonderland. 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 18
Quality Balls, an R-rated documentary from director Barry Avrich about stand-up comedian David Steinberg. 1:30 p.m.

Under the Same Sun, a PG-13 drama about two businessmen—one Palestinian and one Israeli—who are struggling to forge a business relationship. (Screening follows Quality Balls.)
