Description: Six time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon has earned a well deserved reputation as a compelling and captivating live performer. In 2001, she inspired an enthusiastic standing ovation from the music industry as a featured performer on the 43rd annual Grammy telecast from Los Angeles. She made her feature film debut performing the theme song for Mel Gibson’s “What Women Want” and sang an acclaimed remake of the Sinatra classic “Fly me to the Moon” for the feature film “The Visit.” She has performed with a veritable who’s who in jazz from Ray Charles and Ellis Marsalis to Al Jarreau, George Benson and many, many others. She has eight recordings to her credit, including three for Columbia, under the guidance of the famed producer George Butler. Her more recent recordings for the Concord label include “Live,” a live concert recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and her newest release, “Freelon & The Count Basie Orchestra.” The L.A. Times says “Freelon sang with exquisite musicality and an unerring sense of swing.” USA Today boasts “ Freelon makes each song such a personal statement that they all seem fresh and new” and All Music Guide says, “the dynamic, award winning vocalist emanates her eclectic musical tastes with cozy intimacy, soulful nuance, and curvaceous phrasings. Freelon is a gift to lovers of great vocal jazz in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.
