Description: Movies & Music on the Lawn: Around the World stops in England for the melodrama, “Piccadilly” (1929), directed by E. A. Dupont. The film is set in London’s cabaret district where Mabel (Gilda Gray) and Victor (Cyril Richard) are the star dancers. After a series of incidences that put the cabaret in jeopardy, the owner decides to give a Chinese kitchen maid, Shosho (Anna May Wong), a chance to save the business. Soon after Shosho’s debut in the spotlight jealousy and high drama ensue.
Similar to the film itself, the young Chinese American actress, Wong, outshined the movie’s headliner, Gilda Gray. So much so that “Piccadilly” is considered one of Wong’s best films. Director Dupont indulged in extreme close-ups that magnify her exotic beauty. Likewise, he was not shy to shed light on the racism present in early 20th century London. A scene in which Wong’s character kisses the English actor Jameson Thomas was cut to appease U.S. censors.
A gem of British film noir, “Piccadilly” is a sensual and stylish depiction of jealous and ambition. Please bring a picnic and a friend June 30, 8 p.m. Free for members of the Gallery, $5 for non members.
Music provided by Toussiant- Baptiste, Faucheux and Fontan.
