Description: The unparalleled comic genius of Charlie Chaplin and the adorable antics of Jackie Coogan are brought to City Park as part of Movies & Music on the Lawn. The gallery will show the feature-length film, The Kid, at 8 p.m. on August 26.

Continuing the successful outdoor film series The Kid (1921) is heralded as one of Chaplin’s finest movies. The story follows The Tramp (Chaplin) as he coincidently assumes the role of father to the abandoned Kid (Coogan). After a few years the reluctant mother, Edna, attempts to find her son. What ensues is the perfect blend of comedy and tragedy that set an early cinema standard.

Chaplin’s inspiration for the film is similar to the pathos it embodies. Days after losing his infant son he began working on the script for The Kid. Further influence on the film undoubtedly comes from Chaplin’s childhood memory of being separated from his mother at age 7. However the positive impact of the movie is unmistakable. As reviewer David Robinson states, “The Kid gave Chaplin the only true co-star of his career, and brought both Chaplin and the child to an unparalleled peak of world fame and affection.”

The Red Shift Collective will provide the music. Admission is $5 for the general public and free for members. The event will be held indoors in case of rain.
