Description: The East Baton Rouge Parish Library will hold its annual Genealogy Conference on Saturday, August 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Boulevard. Participants are invited to take a look at new research tools available in the Genealogy Room and new technological advances in DNA research and optical laser technology, which can lead them to discover information about their ancestors.
At the conference, guest speakers Tammy Pruet-Northrup and Colleen Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., will discuss new tools for research and how patrons can find out more about their genealogy. Pruet-Northrop, manager for the DNA Unit of Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory, will speak on the Louisiana DNA database and the role of the DNA in the Hurricane Katrina Relief project. A native of Baton Rouge, Pruet-Northrop is a 1988 graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a 1991 graduate of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU. She authored the original version of the Louisiana CODIS law, the first piece of legislation in the country to authorize DNA sampling of arrestees, as well as the expansion of that law authorizing the collection of all convicted offenders and arrestees for felony offenses.
Dr. Fitzpatrick, author of Forensic Genealogy and co-author of DNA & Genealogy, will speak on forensic genealogy and analyzing old photographs. She is a recognized expert in optical and laser measurement techniques, with many years experience developing innovative technologies for NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense. Her first book, Forensic Genealogy, has been widely recognized for its innovative application of forensic science investigative techniques to genealogical research. She has lectured extensively on the subject throughout the U.S. Forensic Genealogy has been featured on NPR's Talk of the Nation Program with Neil Conan (July 2005), and has been the cover article for Internet Genealogy (Online Bonus Edition June 2006), Family Tree Magazine (April 2006) and Family Chronicle (October 2005).
The Louisiana Calligraphy Guild will be present from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. to assist with four-generation family charts. From 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., Dr. Fitzpatrick will give a brief discussion session on setting up a surname DNA project. Participants are asked to bring family pictures.
