Finding Fantastic Mr. Fox in Baton Rouge

What started as a class project last August for LSU environmental science student Ahsennur Soysal has slowly become an online community via Facebook and Instagram to find and learn more about foxes.

Members can submit photos, GPS coordinates and information about recent fox sightings to help map the animals around the city. Within three months of the project’s start, 91 sightings were tracked and an online map of plotted sightings soon followed.

The group continues to grow, monitoring foxes and fox families from a safe distance in neighborhoods from Kenilworth to Broadmoor to the LSU and City Park lakes. (Foxes aren’t known to carry diseases in the way of raccoons and opossums, but they are easily spooked.)

In April, the group hosted one of the largest LSU Science Café events to date, bringing in a record crowd when they explained their work. facebook.com/findfoxlsu; on Instagram: #findfoxLSU
