Off The Wall

Luchadores of the Cultural Crusades Unite

March 25, 2008
By Erin Rolfs

I have to confess something that's been bothering me for a couple of weeks now. And it's not what you think it is. We went to a facility and the tests were conclusive, I do not have restless leg syndrome. The real problem is that I've gone to maybe a third of the art events that I've been pushing for people to attend. And this next weekend chips into that unimpressive ratio even more. So in order to distract from my own hypocrisy, I am delegating to anyone who reads this blog (if it is, in fact, more than just my mom) the task of responding back to me with your experiences at various happenings around town.

I'm not trying to pawn my job off on you. I just think we could tag team all the many hip events that go down, like some kind of posse of cultural luchadores. So don't look at this as if I am sending you out into the ring all alone. I'm right behind you, standing on the ropes, ready to pile drive into some artsy mess, just as soon as I get back from this wedding in New Orleans.

In the meantime, we need to work on your moves. First, Of Moving Colors, Manship Theatre, Friday, March 28. There will be a lot of lithe, graceful bodies pirouetting in your direction, so your agility must be keen. OMC's Luminescence is a special performance celebrating the 20th anniversary for the dance company, so they're pumped. You've got to bring it, too. Next is Louisiana Arts & Science Museum's Jim Henson's Fantastic World exhibition opening to the public Friday. It doesn't make you any less of an art ninja to enjoy the heartwarming visage of Miss Piggy and Kermit embracing or the tenderness of Big Bird. You've got to learn to be strong but sensitive, too.

But don't get too sentimental because it's judo chops all the way to the Shaw Center for the Glassell Gallery's LSU School of Art Faculty Exhibition on Saturday, March 29. Be sure to watch your back because simultaneously Brunner Gallery is having a reception for Swiss artist Claudia Meyer, just across the hall.

Knock that out and get ready to clothesline a whole gang of other killer events taking place Saturday. Backyard Gallery, 870 Violet St., is hosting "Land Alive" with artist Adam Tourek, an interactive installation and performance. The Ephemeral Gallery at 521 N. 19th St. opens its doors for the "2nd Spring Invitational" featuring artists from north, east and west of Baton Rouge including Mary Beyt, John W. Earley, Shawne Major, Winifred Ross Reilly, Chris Simon and Annie Smith. Then put Baton Rouge Gallery in a headlock for the last installment of their video art series, Flatscape. The Gallery will be showing Antonio Muntadas' 1979 masterpiece, "Between the Lines" as a conclusion to the series look at the public perception of history. There's more but I don't want you to pull something and be out the rest of the season.

Now, I'm going to have my cell on me but I want you to try to handle this on your own. Let me know what happened via e-mail or posts. If you happen to strike a Ralph Macchio grasshopper pose mid-socializing at any one of these fine establishments, go ahead and send that to me, too.

Sorry, we only made it out to the Jim Henson exhibition. Great show, though!
