Pro-vagina art takes a stance

March 11, 2008
By Erin Rolfs

Vagina art. I don't know if I need spend my remaining 298 words writing anything other than the location, time and price: International Cultural Center, 7 p.m. March 13, five dollars.

But the event is much more important then the sense of taboo it inspires. The ICC's display of "pro-vagina" art is in conjunction with honoring the 10th anniversary of the Vagina Monologues aka "V-Day." The LSU chapter of Women Organizing Women is hosting a performance of Eve Ensler's off-Broadway hit as well as a thematic art exhibition to celebrate the impact of this play. In addition, WOW's soliloquy of the labia majora and its neighboring parts is an effort to raise money for the Louisiana Foundation for Sexual Assault and Katrina Warriors. The foundation serves to eliminate "sexual violence through program support, education and social change."

This is an amazing example of art taking a stance, an active mission statement that transcends the individual, the cosmopolitan and the pursuit of material gain. Concurrently, it is a testament to the power of art to express those things we cannot say in standard modes of communication.

The influence of the Vagina Monologues, as a work of art, reveals this impact. V-Day is an annual event that is celebrated worldwide. This year, a decade after the first V-Day, universities and community organizations from Sydney, Australia to Mumbai, India will host a performance of the play as part of a global campaign to stop violence against women. With the latest statistics at one in five women reporting that they have been raped or physically or sexually assaulted in their lifetime, there is enough reason to join the V-Day cause.

Kudos to the Morgan McCann and others involved in LSU WOW for organizing this event. For more information on the Baton Rouge V-Day click here. Learn more about V-Day around the world here.
