If you haven't invested in something culturally valuable by the end of this week, your excuse better be pretty good. From Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to Andy Warhol, there's enough art-centric goings-on to make even the least likely habitué inclined to pencil in some time with their right brain.
Inside of the visual art calendar Baton Rouge Gallery does a quick turn over for Katherine Scherer, Leanne McClurg and Kelli Scott Kelley's opening reception Wednesday, March 3. Across town Ann Connelly Gallery presents LSU MFA Robin Cole on Friday, March 7.
The weekend tosses in some testosterone: Robert Moreland's recent work dresses the walls of PlusOne Gallery for his March 8 opening. And if one man alone just isn't enough The LSU Museum of Art is opening Adventures in the Arts on Saturday, March 8. Work from a large, male-dominated envoy of 20th century heavy-hitters like Chuck Close, Willem de Kooning, Max Ernst, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol will be on display. Simultaneously, this Saturday is the last day of the Martin Payton exhibit at Brunner Gallery.
If all the paint fumes are too nauseating, you can always air out with the charmingly long-winded. The LSU English Department is putting on Under the Radar Series: Celebrating Queer Issues and Diversity. The first installment features writers and poets Ana-Maurine Lara, Lenelle Moïse and Solimar Otero in the design building at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 6. This lecture utilizes the feminine Caribbean-American voice to approach the series' topic. Keeping with the theme of "issues," the tormented and desperate take stage for BRLT's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Saturday, March 8, is a perfect time to catch a performance before the Baton Rouge cast heads east for the Tennessee Williams Festival.
This is just a small selection, but doesn't it feel good to have the luxury of a choice? It's almost like we're living in the capital city of some culturally rich and diverse region.
