Say you want a resolution

January 2, 2008
By Brandi Simmons

I generally don't make New Year's resolutions. They annoy me. I get all jazzed about starting fresh for the first week of the year, until I get tired of it and feel guilty for not being able to stick it out longer. I'm sure most of you are the same way. I can't think of any friends who actually stick to resolutions. So let's try it together this year. These are the two big resolutions I'm going to attempt, and maybe you'll follow suit. I hear that strength comes in numbers.

Be healthier. Let's be realistic and not go overboard here. I'm removing Cokes and all other carbonated, sugary delights (except for beer; that would just be silly) from my diet. It's already been nine days, so I think I've gotten through the violent detox stage by now. I bought a yoga DVD, which I suspect will just be watched and made fun of, but buying it was the first step. And I'm going to attempt to cook more instead of going out to eat. This could prove to be a pain, considering I have a tendency to use every pot and pan in the cabinet and I don't have a dishwasher. I am not, by any means, giving up things like Canes or CC's, nor am I planning on doing anything rash like running laps around the neighborhood or going to a gym. That may work for some of you, but not this girl.

Try new things. I already have some of these things planned, like vacationing in London and buying at least one piece of local art. Kleinpeter ice cream is just around the corner, so I'm sure I'll be trying more than my share of that (don't criticize me; the milk is rBGH-free so that's going to count as healthy). I'm going to make a bigger effort to be more involved in the community, attend more cultural events and try to spend time away from the internet and the newest man in my life, Henry (he's a lovely flat screen TV; we're still in the honeymoon period and he can do no wrong). New things I'm willing to try will probably not involve the following: tofu, camping, wild game, the Metro Council, politics, cigarettes, dolls, clowns or any member of the Spears family. There are probably other things, too, but these currently top my list of don'ts.

What are you going to resolve to do, if at least for the first week of the year? Have suggestions on some new things I should try in 2008? Let me know by leaving a comment below. And if you see me drinking Coke, just come and take it away.
