Red Stuck

Flirting with change and munching on fried macaroni

I’m usually a bit apprehensive about trying new things. It’s not that I don’t want to, I just usually think of a pretty good reason why I shouldn’t. But here lately, I’ve felt a little like I’m stuck in a rut. Red stuck, if you will. So this weekend, I tried a handful of new things. Not all of them were worth doing again, but at least I tried.

Friday, 8 p.m., played Nintendo Wii. I love games. I haven’t actually played a video game in a number of years, but I was coerced into trying this new and expensive phenomenon. And I was instantly addicted. Since I’m the kind of person that moves the controller where I want my little man to go anyway, this is really perfect for me. And what a great opportunity to make fun of your more spastic friends.

Friday, 9:30 p.m., stopped by the grass roots art show known as Backyard Gallery. Every chance I get I try to find an example of why the art crowd isn’t as pretentious as some people think. This was the perfect opportunity, since the “gallery” is in the backyard of a local photographer, using old doors as walls with lights suspended from the trees. Very cool concept that I hope one day to replicate in my backyard (if I ever have a backyard). The only problem was that the crowd transported me back to my art school days, where I wasn’t quite creative and hip enough to fit in. Not their fault of course, just my own weird hang-up. I did have the chance to participate in dealing art from the hood of a Saturn, though, and bought a pretty cool print.

Friday, 10:30 p.m., attended Babes in Toyland fashion show at Spanish Moon. This is my second fashion show of the year, and both times those sneaky little models were much too quick for me to get a good photograph. All the fashions came from Time Warp Boutique, where I’ve only been able to find jewelry that fits into my wardrobe. But man, those girls looked cool, so I am only left to assume it is possible to find a good outfit. I was also reminded of how much I really don’t enjoy clubby bars. Spanish Moon isn’t always like that (I can only guess since it’s been a very long time since I was there last) but it was this night, and I wasn’t loving it. Until I found a lone dancer in the corner, marching to his own beat and occasionally stopping to stretch. Sorry folks, the lighting wasn’t good enough for me to capture it digitally, but it was so, so awesome.

Saturday, 8 p.m., New York Pizza Co. I managed to spot this new pizza place on my way back from the new Target on Saturday and added it to my must-try list. The atmosphere was very cute and family-friendly. There was a giant flat screen TV, making my honey very happy, and the walls were covered in New York photos. I had pizza, which had great crust, but the highlight was definitely the cannoli. Thing is, cannolis are my all time favorite dessert, so I might be a little biased.

Sunday, 2-2:30 p.m., Jack in the Box. So I pulled into the drive thru at a location by my apartment, eager to try this fascinating new treat, cheesy macaroni bites. I’m all excited and ready for it, when the cashier comes on the speaker saying, “Uh, we can’t take your order. We don’t have a manager here. Sorry.” WHAT!?! Argh. So I drive to the next location, and sit in the drive thru for 15 minutes, all for three little triangular fried macaroni and cheese treats. But I got them and they weren’t half bad. And I didn’t have a heart attack afterwards, so I’ll probably try them again. As far as everything else goes, we’ll see.
