Two very different performances are going down at the Manship Theatre. Blue Highway is one of the most celebrated contemporary bluegrass units around, garnering everything from Grammy nominations to the hoots and hollers of anyone who's failed to sit still in their presence. They will be in the black box theatre while Olga Kern, the first woman to win the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2001, will spellbind those present in the big room with her peerless mastery of classical piano.
Two of the area's most highly anticipated shows, the XX at Spanish Moon and Pretty Lights at the Varsity are both sold out, so you'd best start working your angles to get in on those. At Chelsea's, Baton Rouge's stunning answer to the tranquility of Sigur Rós, England in 1819 will take the stage at Chelseas with the also geographically named the Sound of Wales. As of press time, there is no word as whether representatives of Northern Ireland or Scotland's sound will be in attendance to round out the Kingdom.
Finally, two benefits of which you should be aware: Last Chalaron, Alive, and Polly Pry will be playing a benefit show on Saturday at North Gate Tavern to help out the family of Adele Litchford as she battles leukemia (more info here), and Teddy will be up in the captain's chair laying down the silkiest and funkiest soul and blues to benefit the Friends of the Baton Rouge Library out at Teddy's Juke Joint on Sunday.
