Out Loud

Hello, 2009! Hello, Metro Council!

January 14, 2009
By Rebecca Breeden

Welcome back to Out Loud, the first blog of the year. We left 2008 with the controversy of keeping Christ in Christmas, and we start 2009 with the new line-up of the Metro Council. Let’s hope tonight’s first meeting of the new cast of characters is as lively as any VH1 reality show—but without all the dramatic bickering.

I’ve got a lot faith in this new council; so does newbie Alison Cascio. We spoke recently about her high hopes for the Metro Council. “We have to have respect for one another,” Cascio told me. “I’m excited about being able to work with Denise (Marcelle) and Tara (Wicker). We can accomplish more with the three of us working together. Before, it was uncertain because you didn’t have common goals.”

The main focus of today’s Metro Council meeting is board appointments. Several seats are up for grabs, including BREC, Planning and Zoning, and the Convention & Visitors Bureau. A handful of former council members and a string of candidates who lost in the fall election are vying for seats. The action starts at 4 p.m. today on Government Access Channel Metro 21 (for Cox Cable subscribers). Or watch it live online at brgov.com.

What are your hopes for the new Metro Council?

I too was totally impressed with the professionalism of the new council and my council rep. Alison Cascio.

Mayor Pro Tem. Mike Walker was very smooth in running that meeting (The guy can land a plane upside down in the middle of a blizzard - kind of smooth). Very calm - very professional even when the "newbies" were unsure of how to handle certain agenda items - he kept everybody on tract.

Like Chandler Loupe's - plain no-nonsense, this is what I'm thinking-kind of talk.

Very impressed with Tara Wicker - she just comes across as a strong - knows what she wants kind of woman.

And I like Ms. Ronnie Edward's smile.

Agree - I definitely like this new council too - from what I witnessed at the first meeting. Every one of them was "on-the-ball" last night.

Except for Mr. Addison - didn't see him there.

Also impressed with Dominique Duval-Diop who was appointed to the Capital Area Transit System by the new council. Spoke very well about her resume, qualifications, Chicago upbringing - definitely seems to understand what it will take to get our transit system up to speed.

I haven't had a chance to see the new council in action yet. Will have to watch Metro Channel 21 this weekend.

Then if you are really bored - you can watch channel 21 on weekends to see MC & PC Meetings and other local stuff.

We should give them all a rubber stamp that prints "OK" much like Gov. OK Allen.

These new council members immediately gave yet another half a million dollars to the BR Chamber of Commerce. I didn't join the chamber since it is a glorified Cheerleading club. Thanks new council for pissing away half a mil....This is reported to be economic development outsourcing, what a racket!!
Welcome to Mike Futrell a 3 time quitter!!
1) Quit as city council representative dist 8
2) Quit as state representative
3) Quit as David Vitter's assistant

2009 will see shrinking budgets but not for the choosen few. EBR has "invested" a million dollars now with these "suits" and the return is a loud endorsement of
anything their told to endorse but little else.
