That’s it! I can’t take it anymore. Where does the Metro Council get off trying to legislate drink specials? I’d have written about this issue sooner but I thought I’d let the drink special ban take effect for a little while. Didn’t this all happen once before, a long time ago, in a time called prohibition? The 18th amendment, prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcohol, was repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933. That was Congress basically saying, “Oops. So the 18th amendment was a bad idea. We really screwed the pooch on that one guys. Sorry everyone. Go back to drinking.” And all Louisianans rejoiced.
I mean, the original ordinance was set to ban drink specials after 8 p.m. Well, that was deemed too early (because the Council doesn’t want the ban to take place during happy hour, which I guess must be when they drink). So they set it at 10 p.m. Wow! I mean, how much more blatant can you be? To me that says they don’t trust us to make smart decisions.
The Council’s reasoning? It will stop college students from drinking and driving. Wrong. Kids are just going to buy their alcohol at a store (which is cheaper than a bar anyway), go home and drink with friends, then they’ll drive to the bar. So this way, they may drive both to and from the bar with alcohol in their systems. But it made sense to the Metro Council.
So what’s this gonna do to college students? I’ll tell you. It’s gonna cause college students to commit acts of desperation. They are going to start living lives of crime. Stealing, armed robberies, breaking into vehicles just to get loose change, things of that nature. All this because some Metro Council members may have done some stupid things when they were younger. I’m sure they think they are keeping us safer with this legislation.
My whole premise when starting this blog was finding for you the best deals possible for the best drinks in the city, while also finding the vibe of each establishment that I visit. The Council has virtually taken that from me. It’s like they took my livelihood (ok, maybe that’s stretching it). But we still lose the thing that made Baton Rouge and its college bars a great place to go out – cheap drinks.
You know what though? I’m still gonna go out and find the best drink prices I can for you, the reader. I’ve got a job to do, damnit, and I won’t let the Metro Council ruin our good time.
Now, can I borrow some money so I can buy you a drink?
