The Wine Loft

By Casey Potts

Where to go, where to go? My friends and I were tired of the same old places that we always visit so we decided to be a bit more daring and visit The Wine Loft the other week. Straight up, a place like this is totally out of the ordinary for me. But, it wasn’t half bad, honestly. Let me paint a picture of what it’s like.

You walk in and it’s pretty dark. Small candles are all over the place (I’m telling you it’s a fire waiting to happen). But it’s not like Fred’s dark (where you don’t want to see who’s grinding up next to you). It’s dark more to set the tone. Additionally, there’s mood music, played low so as to not lose your voice when holding a legit (not a bar) conversation, to accentuate the lighting. There are small cubicle areas on the back side of the establishment to sit with your friends, sectioned off by a sort of lace drapery.

Dress code for ladies? My friend, Christin, described it best as, “sexy, dressy, casual.” What that means I have no idea. I’m sure women understand what that means, though. I’m guessing she means church clothes with a sexy attitude. That’s what pops in my head anyway.

I had on jeans and a North Face jacket over a polo. See, that’ll usually do with my normal places, but man I couldn’t have been more underdressed for this place. Dudes had on sports coats, suits, dress slacks and shoes, big watches, stuff like that. It totally wouldn’t have surprised me to see a guy in a tux walk by at any time. If you come here you better be “dressed to impress,” as the saying goes, because you’ll feel pretty unimpressive once you walk in (kind of like me).

There wasn’t a cover. They just get you with the wine prices. I asked one bartender for a beer and I thought she was going to pull a soup nazi and scream, “NO SOUP FOR YOU!” At that point I decided it was best for me to cruise back over to the group. I still don’t know if they even serve beer.

None of this is bad though. It seems like a good place to hang out with a group of friends, or just one of the opposite sex if you rather. It’s really laid back. No one will bump into you in a drunken stupor (always nice). You can sit back, relax and mellow out after a long work week (or day). Tell me what you think.

I like the Wine Loft for the most part. It is a little pricey but it's not that bad without a cover and I think the atmosphere is worth it. My only complaints are that 1) it's a big TOO dim when you're trying to read the menu - we usually end up holding the table candles up to see 2) though the seeing areas are great and welcome laid back lounging, drinking, and conversation, they're also laid out in such a way that there often isn't nearly enough seating for the number of customers.

I don't know about beer but they do serve mixed drinks (I don't drink wine) - also pricier than the average bar but they're usually a good bit stronger too, at least in my experience.

Nice place, great ambience, a calm crowd... and there's also a small menu of good (but pricey) food & snacks if you're the one starving member of your troop who just MUST eat.

The wine loft is a great place to meet friends or to bring that signifigant other in your life. No loud music. No drunk idiots milling about. Just nice people, nice employees and a great wine list. Oh by the way the food is quite good too. It's about time Baton Rouge got a place like this. So get on over after work, relax with your friends and enjoy the wine, food and atmosphere.

The Wine Loft is wonderful! Monday nights is 2 complimentary champagnes for ladies and 1/2 price appetizers. The Baked Brie is the best appetizer in town! It's hard to spend alot there on Monday nights with that special!
