Cuttin’ loose at JL’s Place

July 25, 2006
By Casey Potts

So it was Thursday night and I didn’t know where to go. Well, some of my buds had just finished their law school summer school finals and they wanted to go out. Where did they want to go? I figured maybe somewhere downtown considering most of these guys are older and supposedly more “mature.” My assumptions were way off base.

They picked JL’s Place. Not to say I was off base with what I thought of them because JL’s is a pretty damn good time. I figured they wouldn’t really want to go out and do anything other than chill. Again, I guess I don’t know them like I thought I did.

These dudes know how to throw down when it comes down to it. And, why not? If I had the pressure of doing well in law school and had to study non-stop all day like they did I’d probably do the same thing when I went out…just get out of control. I take that back. I wouldn’t last a semester in law school because I wouldn’t be able to get out of control.

Anyway, JL’s had a live band, or should I say ensemble (there were only two guys on stage). Though I can’t remember the name I do remember that they were all right to listen to. Most people there seemed to be waiting for the deejay (and I use that term loosely) to start playing.

As far as the attire for guys and girls I’d almost say kind of “Greek”. Though I wouldn’t go so far as to call JL’s, “Bogie’s East.” I would say that guys are wearing either a polo shirt or a button down and khakis seemed to be the norm. See, the dress of ladies is hard to describe because it’s not so easy as to say “polo or button down.” The girls were trying to look sexy, yet laid back at the same time. I’m sure most females know what I’m talking about when I say that so I’ll leave it at that.

Drinks were pretty stiff (thanks to my bartender) and prices were fair. A Jack and Coke was $4.50 ($5 cover), as opposed to Fred’s where it’s $5.50 on the same night of the week (I know because I visited both bars that night). I hate the metro council more every time I go out because of their stupid ordinance against drink specials after 10 p.m. But, I’ve already ranted about that. Grrrrrr!

Music after the ensemble was fairly good. They played a lot of hip-hop, which everyone seemed to like (the law school guys sure got down). Also, if you get there before midnight you should be expecting a sausage fest (as in waaaaay to many guys). But after midnight the talent level of the girls (and quantity) goes waaaay up too.

Would I go to JL’s every Thursday? Probably not. But it’s definitely worth visiting every now and then. The drinks are reasonably priced. The people are fun and the music (depending on your taste) is good too. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.
