Breaking Up is hard to do

May 31, 2006
By Jeff Roedel

Jennifer Aniston’s The Break-Up opens this weekend. And in related news Angelina Jolie had Brad Pitt’s baby on Monday. She wins again. The Break-Up actually looks pretty solid. If there’s one thing 90% of films make me wonder, it’s “How did they get that awesome apartment?” and The Break-Up answers the question: “What are they willing to do to keep it?”

Last weekend, X-Men: The Last Stand cleaned up at the box office, and despite mixed reviews, plot holes and more cases of cheesy dialogue and awkward moments than the first two entries in the series combined, I sort of enjoyed the movie. Did it have depth? No. Did it change the world? No. But it was fun, and I still cared about the characters (though most of this could be because of Bryan Singer’s character development and exposition in part one, rather than anything Brett Ratner did with part three). It was more of a thrill-ride than even X2, and had a similar feel to the Amazing X-Men Saturday morning cartoon I watched as a kid. When most sequels operate on the equation of diminishing returns, I was pleasantly surprised.

You won’t find any X-Men movies on it, but Entertainment Weekly has posted its list of the 25 worst movie sequels of all time. Check it out and let me know what you think. What would you add to this list?

Finally some decent Spider-man 3 set pics here and here.

Is it just me or does Tobey Maguire more than slightly resemble Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst in these set pictures? Maybe Spidey 3 is all about Peter Parker going emo. And instead of wearing the Spidey suit, he wears a ratty-looking hoody sporting a clutch of pins with ironic-looking band names. And instead of fighting supervillains with his webs and super agility, he just reads from his journal until the villains kill themselves. By the way, that blond is Bryce Dallas Howard playing Gwen Stacy, Peter’s first crush from the comics—and rumored replacement love interest since Kirsten Dunst has all but confirmed this as her last Spider-Man flick. And yes, that is a black suit underneath Peter’s shirt…

Wow, I just finished typing this Movie Filter, and realized it’s all about superhero movies. Good grief. Okay, it’s a pretty dry week for DVD releases. Kidnapping thriller Freedomland and a plush 20th Anniversary edition of Oliver Stone’s Vietnam epic Platoon are on the shelves. Oh, here’s the bootlegged trailer for Fast Food Nation. Director Richard Linklater’s top secret narrative adaptation of Eric Schlosser’s best-selling non-fiction book. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Greg Kinnear and Patricia Arquette, and is set for an October release. Now who’s going to have the guts to make a film out of Naomi Klein’s No Logo?
