The Movie Filter

Ali G is in da house

This Friday is a pretty weak opening night at the movies… You, Me and Dupree opens and for the life of me I just can’t get excited about this film. I should be. I’ve been a fan of Matt Dillon since The Outsiders. And, no matter how many silly romantic comedies she slums through, Kate Hudson will probably always retain the halo she earned in my mind from her performance as free-spirited “band-aid” Penny Lane in one of my most cherished movies Almost Famous. The problem for me comes with Owen Wilson. I’ve loved some of his roles in the past, and it hurts me to say it, but I think I’ve reached my saturation point with him. Or more to the point, I’m tired of the same character he’s played for the last ten years. It’s time for Owen to branch out a little more.

Ali G fans unite. Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing his hapless Kazakhstani reporter character to the big screen with Borat. View the trailer here. It looks like it will be a great comedy, unless the shtick gets old by 90 minutes or if Cohen spends more time making fun of Kazakhstan than he does the U.S.

I caught the Motorcycle Diaries on DVD last weekend and loved every minute of it. I would definitely recommend the film to the following people:

1. If you want to practice your Spanish.

2. If you read On The Road once a year just to feel more alive.

3. If you’ve ever wanted to travel to the beautiful country of Chile.

4. If you own a cheesy Che Guevara t-shirt, but have no idea who he really was.

Most impressive in the lead role was Gael Garcia Bernal, who played Guevara with a quiet verve and a giant heart that made his transition from med student to revolutionary both subtle and utterly believable. Now my radar for the young actor is on full blast. He can next be seen in Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep and The King. Check out these trailers. My money is on Bernal to earn an Oscar before the decade is over.

And finally, what’s up with Sylvester Stallone? Rocky 6 aka Rocky Balboa, that’s what (sigh). Nothing to say, really. Here’s the trailer. See you guys next week.
