Cameron Crowe's meandering soundtrack-with-pictures Elizabethtown is out today on DVD. A lot of people hate this movie. I don't love it but I liked it because Crowe's cinematography and tone gets to me like no other directors. That falcon bursting into flame while the band kept playing Freebird was hilarious. Nobody can duplicate the feel of a Cameron Crowe film. Like it or not, he is genuine and puts his heart into every project. I respect that.
In the movie, songs by The Hollies, Whiskeytown, Tom Petty and Elton John sound pitch perfect, and you get to watch Kirsten Dunst act like a stalker on ecstacy for three hours. She's just like that girl in high school you always thought was hot, but never asked out because she wasn't quite hot enough to make up for the fact that she was certifiably insane.
Also in the news is Chinese master director Wong Kar-Wai (In The Mood for Love, 2046). He will come to America and direct a story based on the events of Hurricane Katrina. It will be interesting to see what such an evocative and stylized filmmaker can do with a real tragedy.
Finally, Just Jared has some decent pics of Hayden Christensen as Danny "Don't Call him Bob Dylan" Quinn and Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgewick on the set of Factory Girl in Shreveport. The film also stars Guy Pearce as Andy Warhol, and members of Weezer as Lou Reed and John Cale. Could be interesting, or it could be a mess. The real Lou Reed is betting on the latter. Peep his rant here.
