Like most people I am not a big fan of solicitors calling my home in the evenings, even if all they need is my time. However, I was most excited to get a phone call about two years ago from someone gathering information for the BREC planning committee. I was so happy to share my ideas and answer questions about what my family would most enjoy and to have a little input as to how our tax dollars are used within the park system. One park that I was particularly interested in was the City Park. The location is convenient to many Baton Rouge residents, and in case you didn't hear, it has been getting a major face-lift. It is time to mark your calendars for the unveiling!
On May 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. there will be a grand reopening celebration, including games, food, music, a parade, dedication ceremonies and movies. You can view a detailed schedule of events here. The park now has new play areas, including splash/spray pads, walking trails, bike paths, a dog park and beautiful tennis courts.
Also, this summer BREC has teamed up with the YMCA and updated the swimming programs at the BREC pools. Again, you can get more information on the BREC or the YMCA Web site. In general, the pools will be open from May 24 to Aug. 2 and are now maintained and operated by the YMCA. Baton Rouge residents can swim at the pools daily from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for $1.25 per person.
Speaking of BREC updates, when you visit the BREC Web site, you can register to receive e-mail updates tailored to your family's needs. Now there are no more excuses for saying you didn't know about these awesome programs. Have fun at the parks!

I live within walking distance from City Patk. I love BREC is improving and updating City Park. I will be out of town during the grand re-opening celebration. I would have attended with my dog in tow. I can't wait to take my dog to the dog park. I know she will love it.
