When I moved to Baton Rouge many years ago, I would search the newspaper each Friday trying to find something to do on the weekends with my family and sometimes being disappointed at the options. Now we have another problem, which I prefer: There are so many good family activities taking place in the Capital City. It is so hard to choose which one to attend. Next weekend, I have narrowed it down to two great FREE events!
On Saturday, May 17, Our Lady of the Lake is hosting a "Kids Fest" at the Mall of Louisiana. The goal of the program is to provide information about health and safety, but the children will be having so much fun, they will see it all as entertainment and games. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mall of Louisiana Center Court there will be magic, puppets, face painting, Nintendo Wii games, cheerleading and jump rope demonstrations and special guests, such as a fire safety dog. There are extra incentives for coming early, which include free teddy bears and T-shirts. Click here for details.
Also on Saturday, BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is celebrating their 11th year anniversary, and we are all invited. This is a great time to visit the swamp, since the heat hasn't reached its peak, and we have had our share of rain lately. This is the only day of the year that you can check out the nature center and go on a self-guided tour for free. The hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Calling 457-8905 for details.
