I have had several people stop me lately and ask where to go blueberry picking; apparently it is a family favorite for many people this summer. So back by popular demand: what I know about picking your own fruits and vegetables. A tip from a friend turned me onto The Blueberry Farm at 24401 Greenwell Springs Rd. This family-owned blueberry farm is currently open for picking through July 4. The farm is open 7 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Friday and Saturday only, and then they reopen at 4:30 p.m. for a few hours in the evening. Call the owners for details at 261-6150. It gets hot very quickly out among the rows of blueberries, so I advise you to go as early in the day as you can.
I also love the Web site, pickyourown.org. This site allows you to search by state and area to find local farms open for public picking. The Blueberry Farm is not listed on the site, so I have no reason to think that this site is all-inclusive. However, it does have some great farms listed that would make fun family day trips year round. The site includes full gardens, strawberry farms, pumpkin patches and even cut-your-own Christmas tree farms. Also, the recipes are generally easy and kid-friendly since many include step-by-step pictures.
Have fun in the farms and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

The blueberrys are still plentiful and sweet. Picking is really good. They will be open this weekend so don't miss your chance to get fresh organic healthy blueberries.
