Families on the Geaux

Halloween fun

It just takes one cool morning for everyone to get excited about the fall and Halloween. Thank goodness we had a break from the heat this weekend because there are so many fun fall activities in Baton Rouge this month. These are a few of my family favorites to put me in the trick or treat spirit. These activities are not too scary (my 4-year-old is terrified of even Chuck E. Cheese!) easy to navigate with small children and not too hard on the budget.

Boo at the Zoo BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo continues to improve on its Halloween fun. They will have a fun hay maze, a cave to explore, train rides and of course treats! Let your children dress up for this fun event, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 20, 21, 27 and 28.

Forest Park Haunted Forest The haunted walking trail at this event may frighten young children, but the pony rides, face-painting and trick or treating should please even the faint of heart. The Haunted Forest is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 26-27 at 13900 S. Harrells Ferry Rd. For details call BREC at (225) 272-9200 ext. 444.

Port Allen Corn Maize The MAiZe in Port Allen is well worth the drive and open until Dec. 2, so if you can't cram in all of the fun, hit this one in November. I do not recommend this activity at nighttime unless you have teenagers because it can be very spooky, even for adults. I do recommend this as a daytime family outing, even if you just enjoy the non-maze activities. Last year we spent a Sunday afternoon enjoying snacks, a very unique inflatable, train rides, games, and pumpkin shopping. Click here for details on times, directions and costs.
