Families on the Geaux

Stargazing

I love anniversaries! They celebrate success and hard work, and those are two great words to describe the BREC LSU Highland Road Observatory, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with story times, speakers and of course viewing of our amazing skies. We are so fortunate to have this facility in Baton Rouge, and it is the perfect place for family fun and education. Most Friday and Saturday nights they offer binocular guided tours of the skies (you need to bring lawn chairs and binoculars) in addition to telescope viewings. The observatory also hosts regular Saturday morning activities and camps geared toward young explorers. You can find information on the BREC Web site or detailed information here. From that Web site, you can also request an e-mail monthly newsletter with the latest scoop on upcoming speakers, developments and programs.

If your interest is peaked and the family wants to explore the beautiful skies even more, then visit the planetarium at the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum on River Road. They are currently showing a number of sky related shows: Oasis in Space, Infinity Express and Ventures through our Solar System. Who knows, you may be adding a family telescope to the Christmas list. Viewer beware: Stargazing is an addicting hobby.
