This week my girls and I went with some friends to pick blueberries. It was our first time, but will not be our last. If you haven’t heard, blueberry season is here and there are a few places around Baton Rouge that allow the public to pick. We visited The Blueberry Farm, which is owned by Randy and Lacy LeBlanc, and is located on Greenwell Springs Road. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I found was a manicured and spacious field of blueberry “trees,” a very friendly owner/staff willing to share the history of the farm, and tips for baking with my berries. There were also beautiful shade trees with inviting wooden swings for my children and I to rest.
The farm opens at 7 a.m., and I would suggest arriving early. We went around 10 a.m. and could feel the heat really beating down. They do have a small water cooler and a restroom for visitors to use, but I recommend bringing some bottled water and a snack for refueling. As I mentioned, there is shade and my friend and I both commented on how wonderful a simple picnic would have been after our hour of picking (something cool that goes well with blueberries, of course).
We have enjoyed our berries with cereal and yogurt, made blueberry muffins, and a peach and blueberry cobbler (the owner’s suggestion – YUM!), and still have some to spare. When we visited the farm, the berries were reasonably priced at $1.80 per pound, so no need to put a limit on how much the little ones pick. Even my 3-year-old caught on very quickly as to which berries were ripe and ready for harvesting.
You may want to call the owners before you travel to see them to ensure the blueberries are plentiful. In general, the farm is open 7 a.m. to Noon, then again from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.
