Making the most of summer

August 1, 2006

Although the official end of summer is a month away, the summer holidays will be ending in the next few weeks for most of us as our children head back to school. I have to admit it makes me sad. I usually look forward to the next great event. At Thanksgiving, I get excited about Christmas and as I clean up the wrapping paper from Santa, I start thinking about New Year’s Eve and all my good ideas for resolutions. But this year, I am holding on to every last second of my summer break.

You see, my girls are growing up so fast, like all children do, and while I am proud of the accomplishments they made at swim lessons and the like, I miss having them all in the baby pool, taking our afternoon nap and sharing in music time. So, in an attempt to make sure everyone has had a memorable summer, we sat down last week and made a list of the “must do activities” we haven’t done yet this summer.

Everyone was allowed one day to plan and this is what we have on the agenda for the last week before school starts - Chuck E. Cheese (offered by my three year old), a family swim night (offered by my mermaid four year old), and a trip to the USS Kidd (offered by my big first grader). I remained silent as we planned our last week because I already have my day well planned out. It involves a steamy rainy afternoon, the making of a stepping stone using some of the sea shells we collected on our summer vacation and a nap in a king size bed with three little princesses. Enjoy your final summer days!
