Surefire cure for spring fever

March 13, 2007
By Carole Irby-Smith

I can’t believe it is this time of year again. The groundhog did not see his shadow, so we know that spring is right around the corner. There are a lot of art events ongoing and coming up from judged shows, exhibits and art sales to an art hop. Get out and enjoy the wonderful weather and some of the great local art events. I've found that doing this while eating ice cream is a sure-fire remedy to spring fever.

Be sure and catch the Spring Judged Show at Independence Park Theatre for Louisiana Arts & Artists Guild. They normally have a pretty good turnout for judged shows. The show begins March 15 and hangs until May 10, with a reception held at Independence Theatre Sunday, April 1, from 2-4 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. at no charge.

Kathy Stone tells me the Baton Rouge Art League is celebrating its 73rd year of promoting art in the area. Saturday, April 21, from 4-7 p.m. is the reception for the artists and members participating in the 52nd Annual Art Exhibition held at the L.S.U. Rural Life Museum in the main museum building. This event is invitation only. The following day, Sunday April 22, the exhibit will be held over so the public can enjoy the show, museum and the grounds (at regular fees). The exhibit is located at 4560 Essen Lane (at I-10). The art is going to be for sale and is usually a favorite of art enthusiasts and collectors. Liz Walker, owner of Elizabethan Gallery sent me the following press release and dates for the upcoming Hot Art, Cool Nights-A Mid City Merchants Art Hop. The fourth annual Baton Rouge Mid City Merchants sponsored event will be held Friday night, May 11, from 6-10 p.m. Last year’s spring event was an overwhelming success as attested by the thousands of art lovers who jammed the participating businesses. This is Mother’s Day weekend, so treat Mom to a night out and to a fine piece of artwork.

Mid City businesses will sponsor original, local art. Some will be well known local artists and some will showcase new talent. You are sure to see various mediums and styles of art from works of sculptors, painters, jewelry designers, photographers and more. The artists will be present the night of the event at the various businesses showcasing their work.

Some of the same businesses that have made past Mid City Merchants’ art hops a success will be back like Elizabethan Gallery, Caffery Gallery, Brew Ha Ha, Nature’s Treasures, Ann Connelly Fine Art, Circa 1857, Ragusa’s Automotive, Lezard Rouge, Sabai Jewelry Gallery and Bead It. Other participating businesses will be announced by the end of March.
