Bites: Breakfast for Dessert

Bites: Breakfast for Dessert

Fleming's at Towne Center is only open for lunch and dinner, but they serve a nice breakfast for dessert. Although the menu only lists “ice cream and sorbets” for $6.50, don't be deceived by its simplicity. Chef Eusebio Gongora II creates unique flavors of ice cream such as salted caramel, cheesecake and foie gras. But the flavor you can't miss is his Bacon Waffle Ice Cream. Chef Eusebio transforms a vanilla base into a maple syrup ice cream. Chunks of homemade waffles are mixed in, and bacon bits are interspersed as if they were chocolate chips. The first bite is morning meal bliss; the melting maple syrup ice cream swirls in your mouth as you chew on waffle chunks. Chef Eusebio puts in just the right amount of bacon bits so that they're not overpowering, but still a pleasant, crunchy and salty surprise. The dwindling amount of bites left is just as blissful as the first, but you can easily forget you're eating ice cream. So after a nice prime cut of beef, ask your waiter if this clever creation is available, and devour it with a savory Port. With three scoops of Bacon Waffle Ice Cream, you'll start off your night with a good end to your dinner.—Shelia DeGuzman

Bad Guys, Good Eats! Pop-Up Dinner at Restaurant IPO

Chef and 225 contributor Jay D. Ducote and Chef Chris Wadsworth hosted the Bad Guys, Good Eats! dinner at Restaurant IPO Wednesday night. The dinner was themed around famous movie villains, pairing cocktails and ales with plates of food resembling famous baddies like The Joker, Lord Voldemort, Hannibal Lector, and many others. The highlights of the night were the three middle courses—a black bean soup laced with blood sausage to signify Lord Voldemort, a brace of coneys on black eyed peas resembling Sauron, and lamb medallions atop a fava bean puree to pay homage to the famous favorite of Hannibal Lector.
