Fall Shades

Although we are only experiencing our first heat warnings of summer, it is already time to start thinking about fall. I know, I know, but it’s sweltering outside, so we will call this progressive positive thinking. We are Peter Pan imagining our happy place of crisp, cool mornings and light jackets! As the weather changes, our color schemes usually change as well. We see more jewel tones, ambers, and browns around town. The landscape’s color scheme floods into our wardrobes, making everything feel warm.

Admittedly, I am a huge fan of that gal in the picture above—Joanna Hillman. As Style Director at Harper’s Bazaar, she consistently blows me away with her street style. Sure, the photo is from spring 2013, but the concept of mixing prints and an autumnal color scheme is still relevant for 2014. Notice how she is using the monochrome trend in a subtle way. Mustard pants and a caramel coat would usually clash, but the stripes on her shirt and floral pattern of her scarf offset the shades. The mustard and caramel are close enough in color to be monochrome, but still need a small distraction of pattern for the combination to not appear a mistake.

I showed a few skirt options because I couldn’t pick just one. For a bohemian vibe, go with the maxi. Feeling fun and flirty? Wear the layered mini. Needing a little structure? A circle skirt is a good balance of structure and flow. A striped tee is essential in anyone’s closet. If your wardrobe is missing one, buy one!

Fitted military-style jackets are a more relaxed option instead of a blazer and can easily transition to the weekend with a quick change into distressed denim. I threw in a light blue blazer for the adventurous types. This color is a wild card against the natural tones and the wearer would definitely be marked as a trendsetter. Peep-toe booties are all the rage this season and, like the military jacket, transition well from warm to cool weather. Pick a neutral color that can work with your late summer tan as well as when you are losing it to the cool temps (sad face).

A colorful scarf is easy year round and cat-eye sunnies in scarlet are a fun alternate to the usual black or brown sunglasses. A pop of emerald in a cute cross-body bag breaks up the overall neutral tone of the look. Small handbags fit only the essentials, so you can leave the heavy weight of a humid summer behind.

What are your fall wardrobe essentials? How does your wardrobe color scheme change with the temperature drop?
