Can you begin to mention men’s fashion—or style in general, really—without talking about Don Draper’s legendary and classic all-American suit?
Each episode of AMC’s Mad Men—the series that informed this month’s cover spread on 1960s-inspired women’s looks—features the New York City ad man sporting thin lapels, textured weaves and patterned colors that make for a very masculine yet expressive style.
But anyone can bring his look into the real world by adding small details to kick up their own wardrobe a notch. First, make sure your suit is tailored for a perfectly snug fit and that your tie is on the thinner side. Next, add a pocket square. It doesn’t have to match your shirt and tie; just make sure the patterns and colors are complementary. Also, try wearing French cuffs with small, modest cufflinks, and you’ll be a modern-day Don Draper in no time.
