Brew Ha-Ha celebrates 10 years next week

Brew Ha-Ha, a coffee shop known for its community feel and variety of cake balls, will celebrate its 10th birthday next Wednesday. Things have been on the up-and-up for owner Gabby Loubiere-Higgins over the past few years. Last summer, she expanded the café’s business, serving breakfast and brunch items on the weekends and lunchtime sandwiches during the week. However, the evolution of this small business wasn’t always a barrel of laughs.

In 2010, she received an offer to sell the business for only $20,000.

“The contents of this place are worth more than that,” she says. “It was one of the hardest things I had to deal with, hearing that. Sure, I had a lot going on. Regardless, I had created something. All it took was somebody telling me that I hadn’t done anything to remind me of what I accomplished.”

After the offer, Loubiere-Higgins got to work, focusing on the details of Brew Ha-Ha, changing the image of the local stop and getting more consistent with each cup of coffee.

“I learned that I had to be super present,” she says. “From 2010 to now, my sense of pride is huge, and my humility is bigger. I made some big mistakes, and I’m thankful the community and customers were patient with me.”

With the past in her rearview, Loubiere-Higgins is looking forward to further evolving the café. She is considering roasting her own coffee beans next year as well as changing a few items on the kitchen side.

“You constantly have to be thinking about what’s next,” she says. “Cake balls’ popularity could fade, and there’s all this new competition out there.… I’m thinking about what we have to do to grow. We can roast our own coffee. We can develop breakfast and brunch. We can do more with lunch. The next five years are going to be exciting.”
