Elevator Projects: Game on

One of the city’s fastest-growing arts groups wants Baton Rougeans to be kids again.

This month Elevator Projects, the grassroots creative enclave founded by acclaimed artist Raina Wirta, is turning a derelict Mid City space into a handmade arcade—for adults and children alike. Called ARTcade: Homegrown, the fundraiser will feature interactive games and creative environments produced by local artists.

“We’ll open it early, so there will be a time specifically for kids,” Wirta says of the event that will include team competitions, large-scale projections and even a curious game called “hamster ball.”

After being contributing to Art Melt, WHYR’s Radiopalooza and Baton Rouge Gallery’s Surreal Salon Soiree this year, Elevator Projects has received its 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit, completed a 360-degree rebranding and launched a fundraising campaign through the Kickstarter platform.

“We have some recognition in the city, but our hope is to have a lot more,” Wirta says.

Up next in October, Elevator Projects is coordinating venues and shows for Prospect.3+, making Baton Rouge an official satellite location for the world-renowned New Orleans-based biennial arts extravaganza.

ARTcade will be held in late August. Visit elevatorprojects.org for updates and complete details.
