On Silhouettes

Let’s talk about silhouettes, shall we? My go-to silhouettes for dresses come in two forms: shift and fit & flare. My body type does well with them and they are always a sure thing. Every now and then, however, I like to try something new and challenge myself. When I bought this blouse (found buried beneath a pile of muck at TJ Maxx), I immediately thought of its endless possibilities with skinny pants. Due to the sweltering temps outside, though, I decided to rack my brain for something new. A momentary lack of inspiration led me to explore my Pinterest pins. What did I find? Nothing.

Enter Instagram. Browsing one day, I scrolled past my favorite Lucky Magazine EIC’s account, Eva Chen (@EvaChen212) and saw that she had a number of looks posted that were a more blousy & boxy shape. AKA: not my norm. Needless to say, I fell in love with the idea of trying out this new silhouette. A full skirt, worn under a loose blouse, left untucked. Once I found a skirt in my closet that would work, I was excited to see that the combination created a muted Victorian-style color scheme. It is sweet and romantic, but gently boxy. After the obligatory heel-event-only time period of this outfit, I changed into sneakers and it changed the look’s vibe drastically! It went from sweet to spunky and I loved it just the same.

What are your go-to silhouettes? What shapes are you eager to experiment with in your wardrobe? Most importantly, who wants to meet for a shopping date at TJ Maxx/Marshall’s?
