Jade Owens – Rags reborn

Newer doesn’t always equal better when it comes to style, and local fashion designer Jade Owens (right) takes this to heart and to her sewing machine, too. On any given Saturday the Baton Rouge native can be found rifling through musty sweaters and well-worn jeans with a birth date older than her own, her eyes peeled for the perfect item.

Owens is not looking for her next statement piece; she’s looking for inspiration.

Last December, the LSU student was putting off studying for her finals when she decided to start a new project that has resulted in a unique line of clothing. “I knew ear warmers were going to be big for the winter,” Owens says. “I went out and bought so many old sweaters and stitched them by hand into ear warmers.”

Now Owens makes everything from hats to reconstructed denim shorts with a real “boho, hippie vibe,” she says.

She uses her unique style to determine which items have the potential to be transformed into modern fashions.

“I just love patterns!” Owens says. “When I see anything with a cool pattern or print in a thrift store, I immediately come up with different ways that I can modernize it and make it something stylish and wearable.”
