Corn and squash on display at Red Stick Farmers Market

The Red Stick Farmers Market’s summer Fresh Fest is in full swing. It continues this Saturday, putting a spotlight on sweet corn and summer squash. At the “Corn and Squash-tastic” event, patrons can choose from several squash varieties, including yellow crookneck, acorn, butternut and spaghetti. Forte Grove Bakery will also feature local corn in their Pain d Mais bread with jalapeńo and cheddar cheese. Pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Patrice Tyson of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital will team up with Chef Celeste Gill to prepare healthy kid-friendly recipes using squash and corn inside the Main Street Market at 10 a.m. Guitarist Kevin Johnson will provide this weekend’s musical entertainment. If raining, the market will move inside the Galvez parking garage.

In addition to Fresh Fest, the market will host a special Farm to Fourth event next Thursday at 6400 Perkins Road in preparation for Fourth of July festivities. More than 20 local farmers and food artisans will sell their wares 8 a.m.-noon. For more information, visit redstickfarmersmarket.org. —Matthew Sigur
