Lagniappe Records to start DIY label – The local record shop also moving to new location

Tess Brunet and Patrick Hodgkins’ Lagniappe Records is making a couple big moves this year that will no doubt impact the local music scene.

Brunet announced today that the shop will house a DIY label that will release limited edition 7″ vinyl records featuring local musicians.

The first release features Alex Abel and The Chambers. Brunet and John Tulley recorded the tracks at Tulley’s studio/music and art space, The Legendary Noise Floor on Government Street. Timothy Stollenwerk of Stereophonic Mastering mastered the record. Abel and The Chambers’ 7″ has no firm release date, but Brunet says it should be out sometime this fall.

A Lagniappe Records label has been in the works since the shop opened last July. At first, the couple talked about creating a reissue label to re-release older, regional and hard-to-find classics.

“We still have that in mind, but it’s on the backburner,” Brunet says. “[Releasing 7″ vinyl records from local musicians] was the first step within our means to get the DIY aspect of things off the ground. Once I saw Alex and [The Chambers], I then realized how many great musicians are in town, and we just wanted to get the ball rolling. We thought this would be the perfect first release.”

Brunet says Lagniappe is focusing on one release at time. They have their eyes on a few bands in town, but nothing set in stone.

A big reason why they are taking their time is because the store will move next month to a new location within Beauregard Town at 705 Joseph St. No firm date has been set, but she is hoping to open by late July.

“This new location is more of a spot we’ll be in indefinitely or at least for many years to come,” she says. “It’s about three times the size of our current location.”
