Irish Film Festival announces schedule – Sixth annual event kicks off in July at Manship Theatre

The Capital City will get a heaping helping of Irish cinema this summer. The sixth annual Baton Rouge Irish Film Festival kicks off at the Manship Theatre Friday, July 18, and runs through Monday, July 21.

Friday night’s festivities include a “Wee Irish Film Night” with judged short films starting at 7:30 p.m. The festival resumes Saturday at 11:45 a.m. with screenings of five feature films throughout the day. Following Saturday’s events, the band Wild Irish Roots performs at 10 p.m. at Hotel Indigo (200 Convention St.). The festival hosts a free screening of One Man’s Hero Sunday at the Celtic Media Centre (10000 Celtic Dr.) to honor those serving in the military. A short film and feature will be screened for free at Phil Brady’s Bar and Grill Monday at 7 p.m.

Friday, July 18
Wee Irish Film Night/judged short films at the Manship Theatre
7 p.m.: Doors open
7:30 p.m.: First block of judged shorts, including The Ledge End of Phil (from accounting), The Last Days of Peter Bergmann, Rubai and Breakfast Wine.
8:30 p.m.: Intermission
9 p.m.: Second block of judged shorts, including The Missing Scarf, Mechanic, Scratch and Four Bhanrion (Four Queens).

Saturday, July 19
Festival Day at the Manship Theatre
11:45 a.m.: Doors open
12:10 p.m.: Life’s a Breeze, a 2013 comedy/drama about a family searching for a lost fortune around Dublin. Rated R.
1:40 p.m.: Intermission, featuring music by Wild Irish Roots and food from Harrington’s Café
2:10 p.m.: Good Vibrations, a 2012 biopic about Terri Hooley, a record store owner who was instrumental in developing Belfast’s punk rock scene. Not rated.
4 p.m.: Intermission
4:30 p.m.: The Irish Pub, a 2013 documentary by Alex Fegan about pubs across Ireland. This screening is free and open to the public.
5:45 p.m.: Intermission
6:15 p.m.: Calvary, a 2014 comedy/drama that teams director John Michael McDonagh with Brendan Gleeson, who worked together on The Guard. The film focuses on a good-natured priest who must battle dark forces surrounding him. Kelly Reilly and Chris O’Dowd also star.
7:55 p.m.: Intermission
8:25 p.m.: The Bachelor Weekend, a 2013 comedy about an outdoors bachelor party that takes some unexpected turns, for better or worse.

Sunday, July 20
Military Day at Celtic Media Centre
2 p.m.: Welcome and flag ceremony
2:30 p.m: One Man’s Hero, a 1999 drama about St. Patrick’s Battalion, a group of mostly Irish immigrants who deserted to Mexico after encountering religious and ethnic prejudice in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. Tom Berenger stars. Rated R. This screening is free and open to the public and includes light refreshments by Desserts First.

Monday, July 21
Pub Night at Phil Brady’s Bar and Grill
7 p.m.: A screening of the short film Happy Birthday Timmy, followed by the feature Zonad, a 2010 comedy about a strange man who arrives in a family’s house unannounced. These screenings are free and open to the public and include $1 burgers, cash bar and drink specials.
