Fresh produce from Luckett Farms

Though Derek Luckett has commercially farmed for more than seven years, it was only recently that he and his wife, Kacie, decided to take a different route with their farm out in Pride, La., and focus on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program this year.

This summer, the family launched Luckett Farms’ CSA, taking the middleman and big box stores out of the equation and selling produce directly to residents in Baton Rouge, Prairieville, Walker, Denham Springs, Zachary and other areas.

With Luckett Farms, customers choose between three different sizes of boxes of produce. The “senior” box is good for about two people and costs $15 per week. The “average” box is good for a small family and costs $25 per week. The “abundant” is the farm’s largest package and costs $37 per week. There is an additional $15 enrollment fee. The latter two options have more variety and produce overall. Those who sign up will also receive an e-mail of what’s in the box each week with tips and recipes.

Though Luckett Farms is only in its third season, the family says its customer base is growing. Kacie Luckett says that may be because the produce is high quality.

“We pride ourselves on the fact that what you’re getting has been picked that same day or the day before,” she says. “This is stuff you get fresh, you know where it’s coming from, how it was raised and when it was harvested.
Our motto is it’s ‘healthy food for our family and yours.’ We’re not going to feed our clients and customers anything we wouldn’t feed our children.”

Among the produce Luckett Farms has delivered is kale, Swiss chard, butternut squash, zucchini, eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers and much more. Some other items they have put in boxes are honey, stone-ground cornmeal, grits, pickles and grass-fed beef. In the spring, the farm is planning to offer chicken and eggs.
