Not horsing around

There may be no greater transition for a fashion designer to make than to go from creating looks for the runway to creating clothes for real life. Baton Rouge-based Pedram Taheri, whose high-end ball gowns and plunging V-neck suits have been seen everywhere from New York City catwalks and New Orleans fashion shows to reality TV shows like The Shahs of Sunset, is doing just that this month with a silk and chiffon patterned jumpsuit featuring bright shades of blue.

“I decided to do a jumpsuit because of the feedback I’ve gotten from people who’ve seen my runway shows,” Taheri says. “You can’t go wrong with a nice jumpsuit, but there are a lot of them out there—it’s just that there aren’t any that are as sophisticated or formal as they can be, so we made this one.”

Taheri says the jumpsuit, his first piece in a new ready-to-wear line, will be available in local retail stores soon. The challenge, he says, was to create an item that could be versatile for all body types. “You can adjust it, pin [the V-neck] if needed or even pair it with a jacket.

But one detail of the new piece resonates with him the most: the horses. There is a subtle equine pattern at the bottom of the legs, and the animals have fascinated Taheri since his youth.

“They are so calm yet so strong,” he says. “So full of pride and masculine, but so kind at the same time. That’s very attractive.”

Pedram Couture will be debuting its latest designs at L.A. Fashion Week this month before returning to Baton Rouge to finish and launch his lines for spring and summer. pedramcouture.com
