Fried chicken perfection

Founded in 1935, Chicken Shack has spent almost 80 years serving its “knuckle-suckin’ good” fried chicken to the Baton Rouge community. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve only become acquainted with it in the past few years. But I’m making up for lost time by recommending a visit to anyone who brings up a love of fried chicken. There are three locations and a food truck, but the restaurant at 3161 Mohican St. is my favorite and offers the best sides. Plus, it has chicken wallpaper.

I typically gravitate toward white meat, even though it has a tendency to be dry. In this case, the meat is incredibly juicy and tender. Each piece is fried to golden perfection.

I order the two-piece with whatever greens they have that day, like mustard, turnip or collard, and baked macaroni and cheese (all for $5.99). Those two sides are only available on certain days, but you should also try the equally delicious rice dressing.
