The legendary New Orleans bassist George Porter Jr. returns to Baton Rouge for a night of grooves at Chelsea’s Café Friday. The show kicks off at 10:30 p.m. and also features performances from Mike Dillon and The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Porter is best known as the bassist and singer of The Meters as well as being one of the progenitors of funk. When The Meters disbanded, Porter formed his own groups, including the Runnin’ Pardners as well as a trio featuring powerhouse drummer Johnny Vidacovich. In 2011, the bassist released Can’t Beat the Funk, which featured 16 of his favorite Meters tracks. In January 2012, he was awarded OffBeat Magazine‘s Best of the Beat Lifetime Achievement in Music Award. For more information on the performer, click here.
